We have different types of documents for Identity proof and address proof but do we have
any document to prove our Indian citizenship ??.
Let’s look at the different documents (cards) our government has put forward for
identification of a person ,his/her address ,income ,economic status and many other classifications.
The most common identity card as of today is our Aadhaar card, then comes our voter ID card,
Permanent Account Number (PAN) card and Passport.
i) Aadhaar Card :
The Aadhaar bill 2016 in its chapter III paragraph 9 states that “The Aadhaar number
or the authentication thereof shall not, by itself, confer any right of, or be proof of,
citizenship or domicile in respect of an Aadhaar number holder”. In short, it says that
Aadhaar number is not evidence or proof of citizenship .
Aadhaar Card is issued by UIDAI ( Unique Identification Authority of India) which is a
organisation setup by government of India to issue the identity card and controls related to
Purpose: The main purpose of Aadhaar card is for Identification of the cardholder.
ii) Permanent Account Number (PAN)card:
Permanent Account Number (PAN) was introduced in the year 1972 by our Indian
government for the sole purpose of identifying Tax payers. Under the section 139a of
Income Tax act amended in 1976, PAN card was made mandatory for every individual whose
income exceeds the limit set by government.
PAN card is issued by indian income tax department under the supervision of Central
board of Direct taxes(CBDT).
Purpose: The main purpose of PAN card is for identifying taxpayers.
It is not your proof of citizenship nor guarantee you citizenship of this nation.
iii) Voter Id card:
“Right to Vote” is a fundamental right of every adult citizen in our country. Voter ID
card is an identity card issued to those adult who have attained the age of 18 for the
purpose of casting his/her fundamental right to vote and choose her/his leader.
Voter ID card is issued by Election commission of India for aforementioned
adults above 18 years of age.
Purpose : The main purpose of Voter ID card is for identifying indian citizen while
casting their votes in elections.
By definition,a passport is a “travel document” issued by a country’s government to
its citizens for the purpose of travelling to other countries.It is also used as identity card
to verify the person’s identity and his nationality.
Indian passport is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs,Government of India to
eligible citizen for international travel.
