On paper, this is one of the best teams in the world which can defeat even international sides. But to win the IPL, you also need to defeat the teams in Auction. For which, they’ve got 13.05 Cr. They can spoil the party for other teams who would be looking to get rid of their negatives.
Next come the defending champions – “Chennai Super Kings”
|R Gaikwad||R Jadeja||Mitchell Santner|
|MS Dhoni (wk)||Kedar Jadhav||Imran Tahir|
|Suresh Raina||Dwayne Bravo||Harbhajan Singh|
|Faf du Plessis||Shane Watson||Karn Sharma|
|M Vijay||Monu Kumar|
|N Jagadeesan (wk)||Scott Kuggeleijn (Lungi Ngidi’s replacement)|
|Ambati Rayudu||Deepak Chahar|
Not the same old CSK that they can boast off, but still a very strong team. A very good opening pair in the form of Shane Watson who almost won the final last year and Faf du Plessis, the dynamic South African.
Suresh Raina, not the same old Mr.IPL. His form was one of the main concerns last year and is the same this year too. His bulged-out avatar has, maybe, made him a tad slow in his fielding. He hasn’t bowled a fair amount last year due to the presence of Kedar Jadhav. So, his ultimate returns to the team has decreased by his own standards.
Middle order – Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni.
Maybe the big names of the Indian Household, but it’s not the same firepower. Ambati Rayudu started off in a great way for CSK by smashing 602 runs in 2018 but 2019 has been disappointing for him. Kedar Jadhav – plagued by injuries, couldn’t create an impact last season. MS Dhoni, the core of CSK. MSD in yellows is a totally different business. His shot making, his strike rate, his finishing off skills – all of them come to the fore.
Lower order batsman – Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja. This is the huge minus point of CSK and the main reason why they lost IPL-2019. Right from the point when they lost Albie Morkel and MSD not being able to unleash the helicopter, CSK has not been able to find that smash kind of a lower order batsman. Dwayne bravo could do it in 2018 which was one of the main reasons why they won it.
If we have to speak of an all-time CSK team, the most impact creating foreign players were – Mathew Hayden, Albie Morkel, Doug Bollinger. The present team may slightly cover up for Hayden, but they don’t have a proper Albie morkel who could bowl 4 good overs and smash it in the last 5overs. And about Doug Bollinger, the left arm fireball who was scintillating in the CSK victories in 2010 and 2011.
Right now, CSK have a good bowling line up – Deepak Chahar, Harbhajan singh, Dwayne Bravo, Imran Tahir, Ravindra Jadeja. But there is no genuine pace in it. Ngidi might take that spot but CSK need some genuine pace like a Bollinger who could create an impact for them.
Players CSK would be looking out for –
All-rounders – Ben Cutting, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Morris maybe a Glenn Maxwell too
Fast Bowlers – Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Chris Jordan, Nathan Coulter Nile, Tim Southee, Adam Milne, Sheldon Cottrell.
Next, we move on to – “Sun Risers Hyderabad”
|S Goswami (wk)||Vijay Shankar||Rashid Khan|
|W Saha (wk)||Abhishek Sharma||S Nadeem|
|J Bairstow (wk)||Mohammad Nabi||Bhuvneshwar Kumar|
|Kane Williamson||Sandeep Sharma|
|David Warner||T Natarajan|
|Manish Pandey||Siddarth Kaul|
One of the most under estimated teams in the IPL, Champions of the 2016- IPL is team with many super stars but still has a few chunks in its armour. First up, they’ve got amazing opening combo which was one of the most successful one in the last season- David Warner and Johnny Bairstow. Follow that up with the captain Kane Williamson, probably the best top-3 in the tournament. But they have used up their 3 foreign players for the top-3 itself. But still, their middle order has a reliable pair with Manish Pandey who is in the form of his life and Vijay Shankar who can score a few runs and chip away with a few overs. But the main problem for SRH since its inception has been their finishers. Previously, they’ve tried out players like Yusuf Pathan, Deepak Hooda, Shakib al Hassan and many more. But none could seal their spot in the team. They are still looking for a finisher and that’s what they’ll be aiming for in this auction. Albeit their finishing up problems, their bowling has been their strong suite with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Siddharth kaul or Khaleel Ahmed opening for them followed up with Rashid Khan, the IPL born super star. Partner in crime for him would be Shahbaaz Nadeem who recently made his debut for India in the Test format but a proven performer in this format too. He was successful in opening the bowling for Delhi Daredevils. They’ve got a fifth bowler in Vijay Shankar too. For Khaleel and Siddharth Kaul, they’ve got backup in the form of Sandeep Sharma and Basil Thampi, a yorker specialist.
Now, there is a catch for SRH. They can have a great finisher and a very good 5th bowler in the form of Mohammad Nabi but they have to get rid of their opening combo. They’ve got to drop Johnny Bairstow for someone like a Nabi who can give you the balance in the team. Is that a sacrifice worth it? Are they willing to take that risk? Or are they looking for an Indian finisher this auction? Let’s see!
Players SRH would be looking out for – Sam Curran, Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Morris, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Marsh, Chris Woakes
Next up – “Rajasthan Royals”
|Manan Vohra||Riyan Parag||Ankit Rajpoot|
|Jos Buttler (wk)||Ben Stokes||M Lomror|
|Sanju Samson (wk)||Shreyas Gopal||Mayank Markande|
|Steven Smith||Jofra Archer||Varun Aaron|
|Shashank Singh||Rahul Tewatia|
Rajasthan Royals, the winner of the first season of the IPL, but not great contenders since then. But this year, they could be up for something because they’ve let out a huge number of players and got players who are superstars and in the form of their lives. First up with the openers – Jos Buttler, their best opener of all time with Manan Vohra who could be a potent partner and also attack the opponents. He was once retained by Kings XI Punjab, that’s when he played out really well. Follow this up with a Steve Smith at No.3, one of the best batsmen in the world forms a great top order. Then comes Sanju Samson at No.4 who has been really promising since the past couple of years in the IPL and the domestic tournaments, and Ben Stokes who is having nothing short of a miraculous year with his form and match winning abilities forms a great middle order. But then come their problems, their lower order batsman has been their problem. Last year, Krishnappa Gowtham tried to do it upto an extent but now he’s been traded to Punjab. So, this season, again they’ll be needing an Indian finisher or they could push Buttler down the order and try out a new Indian youngster. But that move didn’t seem to work out for them in 2018. So, it’ll be interesting to see how they move on with their plans. On the bowling side, they seem to have far lesser problems as they have got their spearhead Jofra archer bouncing out his opponents with pace. Now they’ve got the twin leggies in their den too- Shreyas Gopal who seems to pick up Virat Kohli and ABD every possible time and Mayank Markande who was traded recently from Mumbai. They’ve also got 4 overs of Ben stokes to go with that. They’ll be looking out for their 5th bowler in this auction who could probably bat a bit down the order.
Players RR will be looking out for: Ishan Porel, Yusuf Pathan, Mohit Sharma, Piyush Chawla, Hanuma Vihari
Next – “Delhi Capitals”
|Prithvi Shaw||Axar Patel||Ravichandran Ashwin|
|Ajinkya Rahane||Keemo Paul||Rahul Tewatia|
|Shreyas Iyer||Amit Mishra|
|Shikhar Dhawan||S Lamichhane|
|Rishabh Pant (wk)||Kagiso Rabada|
Delhi Capitals, a team which came up with a different management and a name last came up with hopes to change their fortunes. A thankfully, they didn’t disappoint. They were among the top-4 teams. The reason behind this change is the strong Indian core which has been their light of hope. Opening the batting for them is the dynamic Shikhar Dhawan with the young Prithvi Shaw. And for some reason they’ve gone for Ajinkya Rahane during the trading. This is going to affect Shaw as rahane might take his place. At No.3, is their captain Shreyas Iyer who has been performing well for India. Rishabh Pant will be their No.4 who is facing a bad time right now with his form but can do the job on his day. And this does constitute to an impressive top order. Similar to other teams, even Delhi is facing an issue with finishing off. Chris Morris was getting the job done for some time and also Keemo Paul was making his presence felt and also Axar patel, who chipped away with runs at times. But they might be looking at someone who can play destructive down the order and finish it off in style. In the bowling department, they’re kind of full there, especially with the trade of R.Ashwin. Opening their bowling would be Ishant Sharma who has impressed everyone with his accuracy in test matches and also DC in the last IPL. Follow that up with the pace of Kagiso Rabada, it is going to make a very reliable pair. With the spin experience of Ashwin, Amit Mishra and Axar Patel, they can be a very penetrative attack. The only requirement for this team is a proper finisher and probably a 6th bowler, in case one of the top 5 has a bad day.
Players DC would be looking out for: David Miller, Glenn Maxwell, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Marsh, Sam Curran, Sam Billings, Marcus Stoinis, Colin De Grandhomme, Ben Cutting.
Next – “Kolkata Knight Riders”
|Siddhesh Lad||Nitish Rana||Sandeep Warrier|
|Dinesh Karthik (wk)||Sunil Narine||Kuldeep Yadav|
|Rinku Singh||Andre Russell||Kamlesh Nagarkoti|
|Shubman Gill||Harry Gurney|
Kolkata Knight Riders, often the underdogs of IPL, the 2-time champions, will be hoping for a really good auction as they’ve got huge money in their purse and an incomplete team. There is a Shubhman Gill who’s looking out for chances to prove himself and make his way into the international circuit. But he’s got a partner in the form of Sunil Narine who was a complete failure as an opener last time round. Their think tank has to realise its high time that Narine has to be coming down the order and play a full-time batsman. Their no.3 spot could be occupied by someone like a Siddhesh Lad, who was traded from Mumbai Indians or could go for someone huge in the auction. No.4 is occupied by Nitish Rana, who was up for the challenge last time and could chip in with a few overs too. No.5 and 6 is occupied by Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell who do the best job possible for them. They’ve had problems with their leadership too. So, this time they might be looking for someone like a Morgan who could come in and take control of the middle order as well as the captaincy. On the bowling front, they’re quite covered up with the excitement of Kamlesh nagarkoti returning and Shivam Mavi. Supporting them would be the pace of Lockie Ferguson who has been a strike bowler for New Zealand in the World cup. They’ve also got reliable spinners who can win matches for them- Sunil Narine and Kuldeep Yadav. Albeit a poor last season, KKR will be looking for Kuldeep for his variations. In this auction, KKR will go out fully for batsman and batting all-rounders. So, let’s see how they use their raising bar.
Players KKR would be looking for – Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy, Shaun marsh, Aaron Finch, Tom Banton, Max Bryant, Glenn Maxwell.
Upcoming – “Kings XI Punjab”
|Mandeep Singh||Krishnappa Gowtham||M Ashwin|
|Sarfaraz Khan||Jagadeesha Suchith||Mujeeb|
|N Pooran (wk)||D Nalkande||Mohammed Shami|
|Lokesh Rahul (wk)||Arshdeep Singh|
|Chris Gayle||Hardus Vilojen|
Kings XI Punjab, often the most animated ones in an Auction, they can often surprize you with their choices. They’ve got star players as well as minuses in their line-up which they’ll look to get rid of in this auction. Opening the batting is the coulourful, ex-RCB pair of KL Rahul, who’s had a successful Syed Mustaq Ali Trophy, and the Universe Boss Chris Gayle. You can never take him out of the game, he can win you anyday, anytime. Following them up would be Mayank Agarwal, who has been raising his standards from time to time in all the formats and this IPL is going to be a crucial one as his performances can earn him a call up in the Indian limited overs team too. At no.4 would be Karun Nair who provides a sense of calm to the dug-out. Then comes the young smashing wicket keeper Nicholos Pooran can get accelerate from the end he’s batting. If he’s batting till the end, they can expect a good score on the board. But their lower order is their nemesis. Miller wasn’t really effective in the past few seasons. So, they’ll be looking for a smasher to take up that position. Their bowling also has a few good faces but ultimately, they need a spearhead. Mohammad Shami is there to open the bowling and with him, usually Mujeeb gets the other end who can outfox the batsman with his mystery. They’ve left out R.Ashwin and opted for K.Gowtham in the trading which could help their lower order batting and his bowling is a very reliable which turned out to be one of the pillars for their victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy. And they’ve got Jagadeesha Suchith in trading too. So, they’ll be looking out for bowlers in the auction too. As they’ve traded out Ashwin, they have an issue with their captaincy too. So, they might be looking out for someone who’s a captaincy material. They’ve got huge money in their purse too. Should be an interesting one for them.
Players KXIP would look out for – Eoin Morgan, James Neesham, Chris Morris, Chris Jordan, Aaron Finch, Angelo Mathews, Tim Southee, Dale Steyn.
Last but not the least – “Royal Challengers Bangalore”
|Virat Kohli (captain)||A Nath||Y Chahal|
|AB de Villiers||P Barman||Kulwant Khejroliya|
|D Padikkal||Milind Kumar||Mohammed Siraj|
|Parthiv Patel (wk)||Shivam Dube||Navdeep Saini|
|Himmat Singh||Gurkeerat Singh||Umesh Yadav|
|H Klaasen (wk)||W Sundar|
Royal Challengers Bangalore, as they say, the South Africa of IPL, is a team of twin superstars but almost none other than that. They seem to do well in the auction usually but often fall short of match winners at the end. So, what are they looking out for? Their opener is the best batsman in the world – Virat Kohli. What can I say about the man…He stays at the crease and anything in this damn world is possible! Following him as the opener would be Parthiv patel. Last season, he could make adequate runs to stay in the team but RCB would be looking out for a wicket keeper who could go for big hitting too- someone like a Robin Uthappa. He would be of top priority in their list. At No.3, is another batsman who can turn the match anytime he comes in – ABD, the official superman of the cricketing universe. Once he stays flying around in the crease, there is no kryptonite that can collapse him. But there ends their party. Next coming in would be Moeen Ali, who was really good last season, not forgetting his 5 sixes of Kuldeep Yadav and some really good bowling, his batting was flashy and not really reliable. At no.5, 6 and 7, there were numerous players who came in and out within a flash. Players like – Shivam Dube, Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetmyer, Colin De Grandhomme were all part of the squad but couldn’t play even 10 matches each. So that tells us the story of their lower order. So, this time at the auction, they’ll be looking or someone who could stick together with the top order. Next come their bowling troubles, except Chahal and Saini, no other bowler could make a sizable contribution which in turn affected their team’s success. Tim Southee performed well at times but surprisingly he was released. So, this time they’ll be looking for fast bowlers- both Indian and Foreign. This is going to be a very huge auction for RCB and the key for their victory on ground is to win it in that room big time.
Players RCB would be looking out for –
Batsman –Robin Uthappa, David Miller, Jason Roy, Colin Ingram, Colin Munro, Chris Lynn, Evin Lewis, Martin Guptill, Glenn Maxwell, Aaron Finch.
All-rounders – Chris Morris, Sam Curran, Mitchell Marsh, David Willey, Ben Cutting, Jimmy Neesham.
Bowlers – Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Chris Jordan, Mohit Sharma, Jaydev Unadkat.
